Gāo Yǎ is a multicultural movement director, Renaissance dance practitioner, actor, dancer, and emerging playwright. Her training spans multiple continents, including acting studies at Wuhan University (China), Chung-Ang University (South Korea), and the National Institute of Dramatic Art (Australia). She holds an MA in Movement Teaching and Directing from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (UK), where she developed her unique blend of Eastern and Western performance traditions.
As a movement director, Gāo Yǎ specialises in traditional dance forms from both the UK and China, focusing on Renaissance dance and Chinese opera. She has collaborated with leading drama schools, including LAMDA, RCSSD, and East 15 Acting School, bringing historical and intercultural movement techniques to contemporary performance.
Her work as a performer spans stage and screen in Australia and the UK, reflecting her versatility and deep engagement with movement-based storytelling. As an emerging playwright, she integrates text and physicality to craft layered narratives that explore transnationalism and diasporic heritage.
Gāo Yǎ is a member of the Society for Theatre Research; currently, part of the EMSOC x SRS Mentoring Scheme, mentored by Dr Miranda Fay Thomas.
